Our carers have all completed the basic training in accordance with statutory regulations.
On completion of probation, all staff will have demonstrated the basic levels of competence defined by the national Skills organisation. They then go on to obtain the learning Disability Qualification (LDQ) and, if they don't have it when they join us, the NVQ level 2 qualification in Care. Some have the NVQ in Care at level 3.
Many of our staff have been trained by specialist nurse practitioners at regional hospitals such as Leeds general Infirmary. Two of our managers have undertaken a “train the trainer” in Manual Handling and Risk Assessment.
Some staff have specialist training for learning disabilities or challenging behaviour or mental health problems. Some are trained to provide independent living support or palliative care at home.
Staff are allocated to clients by noting the service user needs and preferences and matching them as far as is practical to staff with corresponding attributes.
The staff attributes we take into account include:
We recruit staff with specific attributes if there is a long term requirement to meet unusual combinations of client preferences and needs.
A key worker is allocated to groups of service users with similar needs. Service users who are being provided with a large packages of care have their own key worker also.
New staff are introduced to service users rom time to time to maintain and sometimes extend the familiar care team and to provide back up cover during holidays and sickness.
Only as a last resort, for example a last minute illness of a familiar carer, will the client have a visit from someone not met before. Under these circumstances we do our best to let you know in advance that this is going to happen. These staff will however be competent to carry out your care.
